Classification by load capacity

• Extra-light load capacity (up to 1 ton): Ideal for urban deliveries or transporting small batches of goods over short distances.
• Light load capacity (1-3.5 tons): Widely used in various industries, including logistics, distribution and urban deliveries. Examples: minibus, gazelle, ZIL.
• Average load capacity (over 3.5-15 tons): Provide efficient and fast delivery of goods in large batches between cities, regional centers and regions. This category includes vans, dump trucks, tractors.
• Large load capacity (over 15 tons): Used for transporting large industrial goods, construction materials, raw materials, fuel, agricultural cargo. Examples: container trucks, refrigerated trucks.
• Especially large load capacity: Designed for transporting rock, ore, coal and are used outside the general network roads.

Classification by body type

• Flatbed vehicles: Have a platform surrounded by sides on all four sides. They are versatile and can transport various types of cargo.
• Tented cars: A metal frame covered with a waterproof fabric (tent). Easily removable for loading and unloading.
• Metal containers: Used for transporting bulk materials, scrap metal, bulky waste and other solids.
• Refrigerated cars: Equipped with refrigeration units that maintain a constant low temperature. Used for transporting products that require temperature control or pharmaceuticals.
• Isothermal cars: A body made of thermal insulation materials ensures a uniform temperature inside. Used for goods that do not require refrigeration equipment, but require maintaining a certain temperature regime.
• Tanks: A special type of body for transporting liquids or gases. Made of metal or special materials that meet safety requirements.
• Dump trucks: The body is lifted for automatic unloading of cargo. Used for transporting sand, gravel, building materials or grain.
• Tractor trucks: Used for transporting cargo trailers or semi-trailers.
• Platforms and low-bed trailers: They are distinguished by their high load capacity (up to 200 tons) and special fastening structures. Used for transporting machinery, machines, equipment, pipes, beams, logs, etc.

Classification by axle loads

Helps determine the maximum weight that each axle of the vehicle can carry. In Ukraine, there are two categories by axle load:

• Up to 6 tons per axle.
• Up to 10 tons per axle.

On some roads and motorways, axle loads of up to 12.5 tons are permissible.

Classification by the presence of a trailer

• Trailers: Vehicles without their own engine that move as part of a road train, relying on their wheel axles. They can be flatbed, tilt, dump, etc.
• Semi-trailers: Attached to a tractor and are not able to maintain balance on their own. Classified depending on the tasks performed: tilt, curtain, vans, car carriers, etc. They provide greater maneuverability compared to trailers.
